Visual Language of Gehraiyaan

The visual language of Gehraiyaan is something which is going to stay with me for a long time. I’m not saying this is the best we have got till now but the language of this movie has it’s own freshness and detailing.

The movie opens with dark frames, sound of rain water and rumbling sky. Then we get to see young Alisha sitting with her mother talking about luck, moving on, hope and continuing their lives with some hope which is yet to be discovered. As the sound of rain intensifies, we wait for some disclosure. But! Rather than simply telling about the situation Kaushal Shah uses a board of Ludo and leaves it for the audience to understand the context.

Also, I wasn’t expecting Alisha to see her childhood pictures beautifully arranged in the Alibaug house. The way makers have carried forward the thought that she has her childhood memories intact in her heart is so beautifully. Isn’t it??

Let’s talk about lighting as well. Most of the frames in the movie are either cold or have a pretty amount of warmth. But the whole sequence of Alibaug is lit up with yellow or tungsten coloured lights. Depicting the warmth Alisha and Tia’s childhood holds is something which needs to be observed.

The use of frame-in-frame technique while covering Alisha’s home also reminded me of Wong Kar Wai’s In The Mood for Love.

I know I’m talking a lot about Alisha but she has so much to talk about that one needs to do it. Her character arc is not only shown emotionally but via her the changes in her style of dressing as well. Alisha’s wardrobe has been divided into 3 parts: one is the casual and her usual look, second being the stage of her falling in love with Zain. Here we can see her wearing more vibrant colours, third is post Zain’s death or her landing up in her mother’s place. She starts wearing dark colours.

Another frame which got my attention was when Alisha tells Zain about her pregnancy. The lights of the party have a wave kind-of look. It feels like Zain and Alisha are drowning in these waves. This can also be categorised as foreshadowing of the sequence we get to see on the yacht at the climax.

Okay last one, Kaushal Shah using a curtain, shadow and Zain to depict his duality is another highlight for me!!

To the people who have been complaints regarding the screen time given to the waves. The waves depict the emotional and mental state of Alisha. The sea is shown reacting to the decisions she takes. The sea is at rest whenever she is stress free.

I did tried to keep this short and sweet. I hope you guys liked it. Do hit the like button…
